Celebrating Woodrow Nash, the “Master of African Nouveau”

Homes of Color has photographed the artwork of mega-talented artist Woodrow Nash in several homes that we featured. Our first glimpse of his work was in the home of an Atlanta-based couple with an eye for interior design. The stunning torso, which stood 30 inches high and had a crackle-glaze exterior, provided an excellent example of how to display and make fine art more accessible in and around your home.

In another instance, we photographed Nash’s work at the home of gallery owners based in Oakland, California. The life-size sculpture of the boy immediately grabs your attention and draws you into the artist’s world.

The creativity and attention to detail associated with Nash’s work is both compelling and mesmerizing. He immerses you in his vision and empathy for his subjects and helps you to see the humanity that works of art can infuse into our environment.

We viewed Nash’s work at Overdue Recognition Gallery in Bowie, Maryland. In addition to Nash, the gallery features a list of several renowned African American artists. We also went directly to the source at Woodrow Nash Studio and Gallery to see what the artist himself is up to in his creative evolution.

Our foray into Nash’s world did not disappoint. The  self-proclaimed “Master of African Nouveau,” Nash’s creations showcase male and female torsos adorned with exquisite carvings and jewelry that celebrate the African Diaspora.

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Nash has operated a studio and gallery there since 2002. His artistic journey inspires us to believe in ourselves and the individual talents that we all have been gifted with. We may not become a famous artist, athlete, or entertainer, but we can use our talents and abilities to make a difference in our families and communities. Thank you, Woodrow Nash, for being who you are and inspiring us to remember the beauty in what we as Black people bring to the world.
