Using Neutrals in Your Home

What are neutral colors?

Neutral colors do not belong to any one group of colors. They are classified as noncolors. These noncolors include shades of black, white, taupe, brown, beige and gray. Neutral color schemes are subtle, stylish, and create spaces that are both restful and soothing or warm and energizing. Neutral colors do not generally appear on a color wheel.

How do you use neutral colors effectively in the home?

Focus on the tone you want to create by combining warm or cool tones with the noncolor. Warm-toned neutrals generally are more inviting and welcoming. These color schemes usually appear in bedrooms, bathrooms, and reception areas of offices. Cool-toned neutrals are more traditional and give off a quiet or calm vibe in your space. Set the mood by using subtle variations of neutrals mixed with other neutrals to make more complex neutrals that can enhance or alter the mood of a space.

Using neutral colors can make a space appear larger or smaller. Designers now explore using neutral palettes combined with accent colors to strengthen the purpose of the area. Light neutrals can make smaller spaces appear larger and dark neutrals can make a space appear smaller.

Remember that neutral colors help you achieve a timeless aesthetic and help you avoid dating the rooms in your home. Neutral color palettes are ideal for those who are unsure about color choices and offer a “safe choice” for individuals who want a foolproof way of decorating their homes.
