Featured Artist: Penny Shaw and the “Art” of Reinventing Yourself

A classically trained artist and award-winning arts educator, Penny Shaw has 50-plus years of reinventing her artistic journey through drawings, paintings, fused glass, fiber, metals, and assorted mixed-media artworks that she has created.

A retired arts educator, she has more than 35 years of experience working as a teacher, department chair, and supervisor of curriculum. Her background includes extensive experience teaching in pre-K through high school, special education, adult and community education, and college-level institutions.

An expert in curriculum design, she has written curriculum, researched educational trends for diverse student populations, and integrated these strategies into the visual arts and school-based teacher education training. Her years as a leading art teacher and multicultural educator with Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia resulted in numerous accolades. In 1998, she was named the Virginia Art Educator of the Year.

Ms. Shaw’s love of art includes designing and instructing online art classes, training newbies in curriculum design, and honing her artistic craft to better engage her creative instincts. Adept at reinventing her artistic journey, she expresses herself through drawings, paintings, fused glass, fiber, metals, and assorted mixed-media artworks.

After years of working as an artist, Penny still loves color. Distinctive pops of color infuse her artwork and draw you into her artistic interpretations.
